For local businesses, I make it very easy to do business with me by
offering simple hours-based pricing that generally requires no
project-level commitment from clients. I am even willing to accept very
small projects that may take less than a day's work. My hourly rates
are extremely competitive, but more importantly, I keep my total
billable hours per project low by working quickly and only providing
the services you really need. I'm able to offer these affordable rates by
using a lean strategy that keeps my overhead costs low.
Let me make one thing clear, even though I focus on
smaller businesses and offer affordable services, this does not mean
the value of my services are "less than" what you get from
higher-cost consultants. With over 25 years of experience and having
authored numerous books and articles, I'll put my skills and
knowledge up against anyone's. I just happen to prefer doing
business this way.
How much can you expect to pay?
A typical assignment for me usually ends up
costing between $1,000 and $5,000, with $2,000 to $3,500 being
the most common. I have occasionally done very brief assignments
that cost less than $1,000, and more extensive projects that
cost more than $5,000, but over the years I've gotten pretty
good at managing my involvement in projects to a level that gets
the client the assistance they need without breaking the bank.
How I keep my costs down:
My
marketing strategy is pretty simple; I provide enough information on
my website to educate prospective clients on my services and
capabilities. I may occasionally run local ads or send out
info in the mail to drive prospective clients to my web site.
That's pretty much it. I'm not going out and banging on doors
or having to pay someone else to do it for me. Because of the
info I provide on my site, I do not expect to dedicate time
landing a client; meaning, I am not out there Wining and Dining
clients or providing presale presentations, meetings,
references, etc. I maintain a very small, unassuming office
that provides me just enough room to get my work done and
occasionally meet with a client. My largest business expenses are
investments in the tools and technologies that I use in the services
I provide, not investments in facilities and advertising.
All of
this allows me to keep my services affordable because I am dedicating most of
my time and resources towards consulting rather than marketing.
If you
feel it's important (and are willing to pay) for a consulting firm
to maintain an impressive headquarters and have a management team
that is willing to spend numerous hours coercing you into accepting
their services and ensuring that every project is a "BIG" project, you are probably not a prospective client of mine.
There are plenty of other consulting firms out there that use this approach.
The alternative:
I chose
to offer an alternative, and if you are serious about making
improvements; want fast, effective, and affordable services; and
don't need your hand to be held while you're making up your mind; I
would be very interested in doing business with you.
